Anticipating Obama

Traffic is moving slowly in Mexico City tonight. Not that inching traffic is unusual, but it is more sluggish and streets have been shut down already in anticipation of President Obama´s visit to Mexico tomorrow. According to one taxi driver tonight, a greater police presence is visible on the street, pointing, as he said this, to a white-shirted officer jogging along a major artery.

A visit from POTUS is a big deal in Mexico and the general population is definitely paying attention.

I have heard several people express wariness at what looks to be a significant increase at the US provided armaments being made available to Mexico to fight the narcos.

But there is also awareness of the recent policy adjustments with respect to Cuba. As is the case everywhere else in the world, the US embargo is not popular policy here. The opening up of travel and remesas restrictions to the island country hints at an engagement with Latin American on the part of this administration that people in Mexico and the region are hungry for.

Another taxi driver, clearly excited by Obama´s presidency made the following, interesting to my mind coming from a Mexican particularly, observation: ¨He has the pressure to perform as a President in a crisis. And he has the pressure to perform as a black President. Barack Obama is under a lot of pressure.¨

The next couple of days should be interesting.

Une visite de POTUS est une grande affaire au Mexique et la population générale fait sans aucun doute l'attention.

J'ai entendu plusieurs personnes méfiance expresse à ce que regarde être une augmentation significative aux Etats-Unis à condition que les armements sont mis à la disposition à Mexique pour combattre le narcos.

Mais il y a aussi la conscience des ajustements de politique récents par rapport à Cuba. Comme est le cas partout d'autre dans le monde, les Etats-Unis instaurent un embargo sur est la politique pas populaire ici. L'ouvrir de restrictions de voyage et remesas aux allusions de pays d'île à un engagement avec Latino-américain de la part de cette administration qui les gens au Mexique et la région ont faim pour.

Un autre conducteur de taxi, clairement excité par Obama´la présidence de s a fait le suivre, intéresser à mon esprit à venir d'un Mexicain notamment, l'observation : ¨Il a la pression pour exécuter comme un Président dans une crise. Et il a la pression pour exécuter comme un Président noir. Barack Obama est sous beaucoup de pression.¨
