The state of Tabasco, just east of Veracruz and west of the Yucatan Peninsula, faces out on the Gulf of Mexico.  In pre-Colombian times, this area was home to the Olmec and Mayan civilizations and an important transit corridor due to its geographic position and abundance of natural resources. Today, the ruins of La Venta and Comalcalco are open to the public; visitors can explore the grounds and, at La Venta, see the famous and mysterious Olmec Heads.

The marshy lowlands produce bananas, sugar cane, cacao, coconuts, and are used for grazing cattle. The foundation of Tabasco´s economy, however, is oil.

Villahermosa, the state capital, is a dynamic, modern city, and the engine of Tabasco´s political life. It has a number of convention centers, including the Tabasco Convention Center with 5 flexible halls with a capacity for up to 2,200 individuals in 11,161 square feet of event space. The Tabasco Park Pavilion, 30 minutes from the airport, has 7 indoor and outdoor spaces accommodates up to 10,000 people. Villahermosa also has a variety of unique venues, including the city’s planetarium and a number of theaters.

The city of Villahermosa´s top hotels include the Hotel Hilton Villahermosa & Conference Center with 220 guest rooms and suites, and 26,493 square feet of flexible function space in 26 meeting rooms for events from 10 to 1,500 attendees, and the five-star Quinta Real Villahermosa with event space for 10 to 600 individuals.

The Villahermosa International Airport receives 950,000 passengers annually with direct flights to and from Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Houston.
