Cathedral in Saltillo

Known as the Athens of the North for its wealth of culture and the famous intellectuals who lived there, Saltillo is the capital of the northern state of Coahuila. This colonial town is set in the Coahuila desert just 55 miles southwest of Monterrey. It has a year round, temperate, semi-arid climate and an annual average temperature of 63º F.In 2006, Saltillo was chosen by Inverionista magazine as the best Mexican city to live in.


The city has a strong automotive industry with a number of plants in the vicinity, including a General Motors assembly plant, a Delphi plant, and a Chrysler Truck Assembly plant. Saltillo exports its vehicles to international markets such as Japan, Central America and Canada.


Saltillo’s neoclassical architecture is most visible in the city’s Historic Center where visitors can find the Santiago Cathedral, the Arms Plaza and the Alameda Zaragoza Park with an artificial lake at its center in the shape of the Mexican territory.


Saltillo has a number of museums worth visiting, including the Desert Museum with dinosaur fossils, a cactus greenhouse and information about the geology and geography of the Coahuilan desert. The Pinacoteca Artemio de Valle Arizpe Museum houses works by local artists as well as information about the region’s history and geography.


Saltillo´s world-class convention center, Arena Saltillo, has 172,222 square feet of event spaces, including an open-air esplanade, a VIP area and a stage for presentations and concerts. The city also has a number of top rated hotels, including the elegant 5-star and AAA certified Camino Real Saltillo. The hotel has164 guestrooms and suites, and 7 indoor meeting rooms, the largest room holds 500 people, and 4 outdoor spaces, the largest for up to 300 people.
