The Missions of Caborca

Known as the “Pearl of the Sonoran Desert”, the quaint desert city of Caborca in the Mexican state of Sonora, is a short drive south from Arizona. Over three centuries old, Caborca is rich in culture. It was originally founded by a Spanish priest, but is known as Heroic Caborca, for the valiant stand its townspeople made against the American invasion in 1857.

Today, nearly 100,000 people live in this small city, but the cultural heritage is conserved by the local indigenous groups --  the Yaqui, Seri, Mayo and Papago -- and is still visible in Caborca’s various petroglyphs.

Set in Sonora’s Altar Desert, Caborca’s irrigation and natural wells sustain the city’s agricultural sector, which produces asparagus in the winter and grapes in the summer.

A short drive from Caborca are several beach destinations, including Puerto Lobos, Los Tranques, Santo Tomas and Las Salinas. Visitors will find 74 miles of coastline perfect for fishing, water sports and relaxation.

The Oasis Hotel & Villas is a modern hotel in Caborca with 36 guestrooms, a restaurant, bar and terrace, as well as an event hall that comfortably holds 60 to 100 people for meetings. The El Camino Motel has 30 guestrooms, as well as an outdoor pool, restaurant, and a meeting room with space for up to 120 people, perfect for presentations or banquets.
