The Mexico delegation to FITUR 2012 (Feria Internacional de Turismo, in Madrid) was all smiles as the country racked up prizes for excellence in tourism.

The 32nd annual edition of Spain's international tourism fair named the Mexican state of Morelos' "Ruta de los Conventos (The Convent Trail)" as the best of the 35 tourism products presented this year by destinations from the Americas, Africa and Asia. Morelos, located in the center of Mexico, is often referred to as the “Land of Eternal Spring” for its deliciously mild climate and continuously blooming landscapes of flowers. The state, located just outside of Mexico City, has its own international airport and boasts a convention center, the World Trade Center Morelos, with a capacity of more than 53,000 sq ft. Morelos’ former convents and haciendas are favored venues for special events, corporate retreats, incentives, and weddings.

Last year, FITUR bestowed the same honor upon the state of Michoacan, for its "Ruta Don Vasco (Don Vasco Trail), highlighting the traditional artisanry, cuisine and history of that region.

Spanish media company Grupo Excelencias also presented Mexico with prizes during FITUR: to Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit for teamwork in jointly hosting the 2012 Tianguis Turistico, Mexico's most important tourism fair; to Mexico City, for excellence in security; and to Mexico's National Restaurant Association, for the promotion of Mexico's cuisine, recently named Intangible World Heritage by the United Nations.

This year's fair attracted more than 10,000 companies from 166 destinations, and drew more than 200,000 attendees.
